Bertina Balajadia Grajo

Founder/President

Bertina Grajo is the founder and president of the Marianas Alliance for Growth of Islanders (MÅGI), a nonprofit organization based in Beaverton, Oregon, dedicated to celebrating and empowering the Pacific Islander community. With a strong academic foundation, Bertina holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and dual Master’s degrees in Human Services and Criminal Justice. She is currently completing her Doctorate in Public Administration, further solidifying her expertise in addressing complex social challenges and fostering positive community impact.

Professionally, Bertina serves as an investigator for the State of Oregon, where her skills in research, analysis, and problem-solving contribute to the well-being of her community. Guided by principles of fairness, collaboration, and inclusivity, she is deeply committed to promoting understanding and equal opportunity. Whether through her professional role or her nonprofit initiatives, Bertina consistently works to bridge gaps, foster meaningful connections, and inspire unity among people from diverse backgrounds.

Tommy Jesus Grajo

Vice President

Tommy Grajo is a retired Army veteran with an illustrious 25-year career marked by exceptional leadership, bravery, and dedication. Throughout his military service, he earned numerous awards and citations, showcasing his ability to adapt to ever-changing environments and excel under pressure. Whether leading teams in complex operations or devising strategic solutions to unforeseen challenges, Tommy consistently demonstrated a talent for assessing situations, crafting effective plans, and achieving mission success.

Beyond the military, Tommy pursued a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career, where he honed his discipline, mental toughness, and resilience in a highly competitive field. His ability to think strategically and adapt to dynamic circumstances proved invaluable, both in the ring and in life.

As an entrepreneur, Tommy owned and operated a successful food truck, transforming it into a space for cultural exchange and community connection. His business acumen, paired with his adaptability, allowed him to overcome challenges and turn his vision into a thriving venture.

Tommy also holds a Bachelors in Criminal Justice and a Masters in Emergency Management, deepening his understanding of societal systems and enhancing his problem-solving skills. His diverse experiences—spanning military service, professional sports, and entrepreneurship—highlight his exceptional ability to lead, adapt, and inspire. With a strategic mindset and unwavering determination, Tommy Grajo continues to make a positive impact in every endeavor, proving that challenges are simply opportunities in disguise.

Aaron Unpingco

Treasurer

Aaron Unpingco is a highly accomplished individual with a diverse background in public service and policy analysis. Currently serving as a Veterans Policy Analyst for the Bureau of Labor and Industries, Apprenticeship and Training Division (BOLI, ATD), Aaron is dedicated to meeting and anticipating the needs of veterans in their journey towards apprenticeship in the State of Oregon. Prior to his current role, Aaron gained valuable experience serving under the Lieutenant Governor of Guam for six years. During this time, he worked extensively with grants, public safety, and island beautification tasks. This experience provided him with a strong foundation in policy development and implementation. In addition, Aaron proudly served in the US Army for four years. This military experience equipped him with valuable skills such as leadership, discipline, and a strong work ethic. With his extensive background in public service and grant writing, Aaron brings a unique perspective and valuable insights to his role. His expertise is particularly valuable in ensuring diversity and inclusivity goals within Marianas Alliance for Growth of Islanders. His commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity make him an invaluable asset to the organization.

Marie Sablan

Marketing Director

Marie Sablan is a Creative Director and Communications Strategist with 20+ years of experience and is skilled in various design categories, including strategizing, branding, developing, and producing visual content. Born and raised on Guam, she flew out to Portland, Oregon after graduating from Academy of Our Lady of Guam and has lived in the Pacific Northwest ever since. 

 

Marie is passionate about food and travel, with a deep appreciation for cultural experiences. She is currently serving as a Senior Creative Strategist at Multnomah County Health Department, dedicated to making a positive impact in the community.

Melissa Cayton

Program Director

Melissa Cayton is a celebrated figure within the Pacific Islander and Deaf/ASL communities, renowned for her dynamic contributions as an actor, singer, and professional Polynesian dancer. With a rich background in CHamoru, Deaf & Coda culture, Melissa uses her artistic talents to forge powerful connections through entertainment and workshops to audiences, bridging the gap between cultures and languages. 


As the director and coordinator of the Guam Deaf: Exposed & Empowered documentary Melissa is dedicated to the vital task of preserving and promoting sign language within her community preservation, focusing on the preservation of the Chamoru Sign Language. Her influence extends to the digital realm as a recognized ASL YouTube influencer and the creator of the innovative ASL competition "Signing Idol," which showcases the vibrant talents of ASL performers. Melissa's work emphasizes inclusivity and representation, celebrating the diverse voices within the Deaf community. Her multifaceted talents and unwavering commitment leave a lasting impact, inspiring countless individuals and fostering a sense of community across cultures.
